Courtroom art for media outlets
As a Dutch courtroom sketch artist I am right in the middle of current affairs. Violent cases, matters that make an impact on society, that concern our sense of justice and security. Public access to justice is a great asset; in this way we as a society can check whether everyone has a fair trial. Everybody is innocent until proven guilty, and anyone (yes, even you) can end up having to appear before a judge.
I'm part of the press that reports from those cases, to inform the general public.
By drawing live, I practice visual journalism. I am a member of the NVJ, the Dutch association of journalists, own a press card, and have been sketching in courtrooms since 2016. Most of the time, the media outlets are my clients - like Dutch newspapers and television programmes: Algemeen Dagblad, RTL Boulevard, Het Financieele Dagblad, Omroep Brabant, Volkskrant. I travel to and draw at the courts upon request of these outlets, but I am an independent visual journalist.
In 2020, I also got to make fictional courtroom sketches for the Netflix-series Undercover.
